If you thought the twists and turns of the 2015 NRL season couldn’t keep up with what it offered in April, think again. The month of May has been just as impressive in all four conferences.
NRL South: the Raiders’ Steely Resolve
The Canberra Raiders of 2014 were a side often guilty of psychologically not being in the game; over the last month the Raiders of 2015 have proven they’re never out of it. They are capable of chasing down big leads and posting large scores of their own. The Raiders are currently third in the NRL South conference, but they’re not too far off the pace. There are many positive signs that point to a far more successful season than in 2014.
NRL North: the Knights Unsaddled
The Newcastle Knights were the surprise packets of the NRL North conference in April due to their winning start to the season, but ever since their form has alarmingly fell away. From a 4-0 opening month, the Knights are now 5-6 and well off the pace in the NRL North. The Brisbane Broncos and North Queensland Cowboys both currently hold a six-point buffer between them and the rest of the conference, which means if the Knights don’t get back on their feet and find form soon they will be also-rans for another year.
NRL West: the Unbearable Absence of Form
Depending on how you view it, what is going on in the NRL West conference right now could be either very alarming or uniquely interesting. Every team has impressed at various points over the season so far, but they have also struggled to consistently string wins together. Injuries and suspensions have not helped some teams’ causes, but the fact remains the battle for the NRL West conference title is still bogged down in the mire. Need further proof? Every other NRL conference has one team or more with a 50% winning record or greater; the NRL West conference has none.
NRL East: Beware the Warriors
After a slow and frustratingly inconsistent opening to their 2015 campaign, the New Zealand Warriors are building momentum – and it only spells danger for their NRL East conference counterparts. While the South Sydney Rabbitohs and the Sydney Roosters have recently floundered at the top of the conference table, the Warriors have quietly strung some impressive wins together to now sit equal first with the two aforementioned Sydney teams. Their next three rounds will be crucial to their fortunes: they have a chance to increase their confidence with a win over the hapless Knights in Auckland before back-to-back conference clashes with the Rabbitohs and Roosters respectively. There is every chance the Warriors could be sole leaders of the NRL East conference when the dust has settled.
